What Are Apprentices & Journey-Workers?

In traditional trades, an apprentice is someone who learns a skilled craft through hands-on experience under the guidance of a seasoned professional. Once they’ve mastered the necessary skills and earned their certifications, they become a journey-worker—a fully qualified expert in their field. This model has been used for generations in manual labor industries like plumbing, electrical work, and carpentry.

At The Inspired Community Project, we’ve reimagined this model to fit a new kind of essential work: behavioral health and early childhood intervention.

  • Our apprentices serve as Behavior Technicians, learning the science of behavior through real-time practice in classrooms, while receiving paid training, supervision, and career support.

  • Our journey-workers are certified Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) and Lead Classroom Teachers—skilled, experienced professionals who guide, mentor, and model best practices for the next generation of behavioral health providers.

We are proud to be one of the few non-manual labor apprenticeship programs in New York State, proving that workforce development belongs not just on construction sites, but in classrooms, clinics, and communities. Our model doesn’t just build skills—it builds equity, empowerment, and a stronger future for children and professionals alike.

“I am thrilled to be joining the team for the new-age program that is The Inspired Community Project! As a former CEO of a nonprofit, I recognize the difficulties and tribulations that are associated with starting and maintaining a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and to witness the dedication and attention to detail Jill and all of her team have exemplified throughout the entire process and to see the truly amazing facilities they’ve curated for their kiddos shows what an incredibly extraordinary, supportive, and encouraging program this will be. I am ecstatic to be joining this team of empathetic, dedicated, and sharply intelligent individuals and only aspires to add to and contribute greatly to the success of the team!”
